The distinction between Search Engine Optimisation and Search Engine Marketing is often not alluded to on web designers sites. Any designer worth their salt will ensure that sites they design are optimised for search engines, it’s web design 101.
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) involves adding hidden tags and words that the user doesn’t see, but words search engines look for and include important keywords in high priority places. I won’t describe what to do in detail, you can search for SEO on the web if you want to know more.
What most designers won’t offer as standard is Search Engine Marketing (SEM). The SEM process takes time and is an ongoing, again search yourself for the detail, but analysing keywords, looking at traffic data and creating incoming links are all involved. Improving your presence using SEM is time consuming and tough work.
Discuss with your designer what SEM they provide in the price they quote. You might want to consider paying a retainer for your designer or SEM professional to help in this area. Having a professional do this for you will save you time and effort as they will already know what to do, the tips and secrets and mistakes of this ‘dark art’!
Experienced SEM’s will keep abreast of the latest developments, which can change at the drop of a hat, should one of the search engine alter there algorithms or rules of exclusion.
You could do some of the work yourself, but it is a varied and fickle business. If you do look into it, just make sure you don’t let it consume all of your time as you still need to run your company!
