When a user types in a domain name, some funny technical business goes on in the background, and almost instantly send the user to the correct site. The pages, content and images of this site are held on a computer somewhere, connected to the web and available to be seen 24/7.
Where these files are hosted is an important, if uninteresting point to think about. Firstly, the hosting is going to cost you something. You’ll want the site to be on a reliable hosting system to make sure it’s always available, and ideally it should serve your pages up quickly. Cutting corners in hosting can affect your site, for example if pages don’t load quickly, users may assume they have the wrong site and navigate away. The cheapest hosting offerings will unsurprisingly be the least reliable and slowest to serve pages, so buyer beware!
Many web designers will build hosting into the cost of a new site, but usually only for 1 year. When discussing hosting ensure you know the value of it, so you can budget for it after the free period is over.
For basic web sites, the hosting shouldn’t be more than £70 per annum at the time of writing, depending on what type of site you have. If it’s an especially complex site you may need extra features such as dedicated hosting, secure servers or database hosting. These extras will cost more, so discuss your requirements with your designer to make sure your not paying over the odds for services you don’t require.
Most designers will be able to supply you with a price for hosting the site on a monthly or yearly basis. If you’re willing to pay up-front for a years hosting then you’ll get the best deal, but ask your designer for a monthly deal if it’s more convenient for you.
As with domains, don’t allow unscrupulous developers to charge over the odds, do a quick search yourself to see the going rate, allow a little extra for administration, and ensure your hosting is fit for purpose.
If you’re clear with what you are after at an early stage, you can get a quote for the hosting that is perfect for the job, and you won’t have to pay for extra hosting services on top of extra design service later on.
