Your web domain is vital.
If you’re an established business you will have a brand or name to use. You can check if it’s available by visiting sites such as UK2.net, which will look for your chosen domain and make suggestions if it’s already been taken. Many of the obvious names are already registered, so you may have to think a little creatively to find a name that suits.
As an alternative, if you’re a new business, you might wish to consider registering a ‘does what it says on the tin’ style domain name. A domain such as www.derby-graphic-design.co.uk is an example of this. These domains are used to generate better positioning in search engines and can be really powerful for achieving this, if you select the correct words. I always suggest that if you have one of these domains you also register your brand name too and link the name across.
Do discuss your domain name with your designer. They will undoubtedly have experience in this area, having experience with domains for their own sites and for clients.
I’d personally like to offer a word of warning here, don’t pay over the odds for a domain name through a web designer or developer. I’ve dealt with clients who have been stung by previous designers charging well over the odds for a domain name, a hidden add on as it were. For a .co.uk you shouldn’t be paying your designer much more than £10 for a 2 year registration, perhaps £20 if you include a bit of administration time.
If your chosen name is taken, you could try and be extra smart. Most users will have heard of .com and .co.uk domains, and for most clients I wouldn’t stray too far from these, but there are other options available.
Most countries have there own ‘dot’ domain extension (.fr for France, .it for Italy). Many of these can be registered by people from outside of the country. I’d suggest that if you’re a mobile DJ, why not get a .DJ (the extension for Djibouti)? These domains will cost a little more but it might be worthwhile to get an appropriate and memorable domain for your business. Another example is the tiny island of Tuvalu. It has the .tv extension, ideal for television channels, and obtainable for around £25 at the time of writing.
You can’t obtain all extensions, but looking at the options, you can take the idea a step further. For example, if you run a fish pedicure parlour, why not try to get hold of a .es domain from Spain and upload your site to www.cleanyourto.es?
