Work in progress leeds logo design

Work in progress logo and sample applications

2 March 2017, 08:57

Here’s a sneak look at a work in progress design for a Leeds based enterprise. It shows some of the ways I try to think beyond just “a logo” to the application of that design, even in this very early stage.

Every File You'll Ever Need

Logo Project Delivery, What Files Should You Expect?

2 February 2017, 08:00

At some point in the discussion of a new branding project, the client will almost always ask what files they expect to receive. At first, I found this an odd query, although perfectly valid, my assumption was alway that I’d supply every file they’d need, why would I design a logo and do anything less?

CJP Business Card Design

3 July 2012, 22:42

I undertook the identity design for CJP around a year ago, and after an initial start-up phase, the company was ready to begin printing some stationary elements professionally.

I created the design for the business cards, based on the initial ideas of strength and quality seen in the engineering the firm undertakes.

Refreshing a Logo : Audax UK

12 April 2012, 13:23

Tweaking an existing design was the spec for the Audax UK eagle logo.

The client had an existing design that was used in various places of the organisation. The members were keen to keep the overall look of the eagle element but there was a need to improve certain parts of it and look at how to introduce colour.

Family History Explorer Logo

Family History Explorer Logo

3 April 2012, 17:12

New business Family History Explorer briefed me to design a logo for their Family Tree Genealogy start-up. Providing “Family History for Absolute Beginners” courses in Derbyshire with an experienced tutor, the look needed to be professional, friendly, modern and fresh.

The client was aiming to start courses at the end of April, around 7 weeks from our first meeting date, so the logo was needed quickly in order to begin to advertise.

How I Design a Logo

24 November 2011, 13:28

I was contacted by a new client to create a logo for a compensation advice website, Compensation Made Easy. The business was a new venture and they had almost everything in place including a web site but they’d not sorted out their logo.

The site was due for launch in a week so the logo was needed FAST! This made encouraged me to create a small video that I’d been thinking about for a while, a condensed sped up version of the design process I go through for such projects.

SA Thompson Identity

Identity Development - Branding for London Solicitors

31 October 2011, 13:54

I was commissioned by SA Thompson & Associates, an immigration law specialist solicitors with offices based on Fleet Street, London.

SA Thompson were looking for a new identity to promote the focus on immigration law and were starting from scratch when it cam too the look and feel. Some guidance was given that the brand should be modern and relevant beyond the UK, recognisable to those who don’t have English as a first language.

New Business Logos

New Business Logo

20 October 2011, 11:07

I found myself browsing the StartUp Britain web site the other day. It’s backed by a number of big companies like Dell, Paypal and O2 as well as David Cameron, and founded by a group of well known entrepreneurs.

Set up to encourage enterprise in the UK, to give guidance, provide tips and special offers to start-ups. There’s plenty on there but often you just get a ink to another web site to follow up on.

British Gas Logo

14 October 2011, 11:27

There is plenty wrong with it but I wouldn’t say it’s hateful to look at and it will look nice on customers bills and in their promotional materials. But I do have issues with it.

Firstly the ‘British Gas’ looks really ungainly. The Gas in particular look wobbly, the tapering in of the G makes the a and s look wonky, the whole think looks like one of those optical illusions where the picture seems to be moving. The dots on the i’s are pretty much awful as well, designed to match the tips of t and h, but ending up looking like either fingernails or one of those mini cans of deodorant.

http://derby.graphics/british-gas-logo

Ecclesbourne Valley Railway

15 September 2011, 11:35

We took a trip to the Wirksworth Festival on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway (EVR) at the weekend. It was our first trip both to the festival and on the train, with a bit of help from the weather it turn out to be quite successful.

The EVR is a great little project, community owned and run by volunteers. This means that pretty much all the staff are pleasant to speak to, quite the opposite of a regular train experience.

Locum Doctor Logo

26 August 2011, 22:25

Tom Lawes a recently qualified General Practitioner retained my services to develop a logo and stationary in order to present a professional image to promote Locum GP services to local practices. Tom required a smart, restrained image that didn’t use clichéd imagary for the medical industry.

Here’s how I developed the logo.

Council Logo's but better

8 August 2011, 11:53

I’ll let go of this bone soon, but while I’m on council logo’s, here’s a few I like, just to pick up the mood.

All of this does lead us to the question of does it matter if your council’s got a good logo or not? I’d rather they spend the money on something else, like emptying my bin or paying staff a bit better.

Council Logo Tour

5 August 2011, 12:08

After bemoaning the quality of the new Amber Valley Logo yesterday, I took a look at neighboring council logo’s, to see what they are offering.

So here is my tour of Derbyshire via the medium of council logo’s starting in the south…

Amber Value

4 August 2011, 11:27

For fear of this turning into a travel blog, I’ll move away from Northumbrian highlights and back to a bit of design. I’ll also bring it back to something more local, and something of a disappointment.

We live in the borough of Amber Valley. It’s a pretty place with some history (thanks to Mr Strutt and his Mills ). It was also the setting for the popular, long running but exceedingly dull ITV show Peak Practice.
