2 February 2017, 08:00
At some point in the discussion of a new branding project, the client will almost always ask what files they expect to receive. At first, I found this an odd query, although perfectly valid, my assumption was alway that I’d supply every file they’d need, why would I design a logo and do anything less?

Tweaking an existing design was the spec for the Audax UK eagle logo.

I was contacted by a new client to create a logo for a compensation advice website, Compensation Made Easy. The business was a new venture and they had almost everything in place including a web site but they’d not sorted out their logo.
The site was due for launch in a week so the logo was needed FAST! This made encouraged me to create a small video that I’d been thinking about for a while, a condensed sped up version of the design process I go through for such projects.

I was commissioned by SA Thompson & Associates, an immigration law specialist solicitors with offices based on Fleet Street, London.

I found myself browsing the StartUp Britain web site the other day. It’s backed by a number of big companies like Dell, Paypal and O2 as well as David Cameron, and founded by a group of well known entrepreneurs.
Set up to encourage enterprise in the UK, to give guidance, provide tips and special offers to start-ups. There’s plenty on there but often you just get a ink to another web site to follow up on.
14 October 2011, 11:27
There is plenty wrong with it but I wouldn’t say it’s hateful to look at and it will look nice on customers bills and in their promotional materials. But I do have issues with it.
Firstly the ‘British Gas’ looks really ungainly. The Gas in particular look wobbly, the tapering in of the G makes the a and s look wonky, the whole think looks like one of those optical illusions where the picture seems to be moving. The dots on the i’s are pretty much awful as well, designed to match the tips of t and h, but ending up looking like either fingernails or one of those mini cans of deodorant.

We took a trip to the Wirksworth Festival on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway (EVR) at the weekend. It was our first trip both to the festival and on the train, with a bit of help from the weather it turn out to be quite successful.
The EVR is a great little project, community owned and run by volunteers. This means that pretty much all the staff are pleasant to speak to, quite the opposite of a regular train experience.

Tom Lawes a recently qualified General Practitioner retained my services to develop a logo and stationary in order to present a professional image to promote Locum GP services to local practices. Tom required a smart, restrained image that didn’t use clichéd imagary for the medical industry.
Here’s how I developed the logo.

I’ll let go of this bone soon, but while I’m on council logo’s, here’s a few I like, just to pick up the mood.
All of this does lead us to the question of does it matter if your council’s got a good logo or not? I’d rather they spend the money on something else, like emptying my bin or paying staff a bit better.
5 August 2011, 12:08
After bemoaning the quality of the new Amber Valley Logo yesterday, I took a look at neighboring council logo’s, to see what they are offering.
So here is my tour of Derbyshire via the medium of council logo’s starting in the south…
4 August 2011, 11:27
For fear of this turning into a travel blog, I’ll move away from Northumbrian highlights and back to a bit of design. I’ll also bring it back to something more local, and something of a disappointment.
We live in the borough of Amber Valley. It’s a pretty place with some history (thanks to Mr Strutt and his Mills ). It was also the setting for the popular, long running but exceedingly dull ITV show Peak Practice.

If you’re in any way interested in new technology, you will have visited the TechCrunch site at some point I’m sure. Set up in 2005 this US based site offers news and analysis on all things tech, start-up profiles, product previews and web site analysis.
TechCrunch quickly grew to become a very popular site with 4.5 million rss subscribers. The big and controversial news in September 2010 was that AOL was to purchase TechCrunch, which it did in January 2011.

Museum Guidebook - Crich Tramway Village As a family favourite the call from Crich Tramway Museum was very welcome and exciting! They were looking for work on a new guidebook to sell to their visitors packed with information not available anywhere else in the Museum as well as providing a route to explore the site. Since 1959 the Crich Tramway Village and National Tramway Museum have created a unique visitor attraction out of the spoil of a disused Derbyshire quarry. Initially intended as a space to preserve and repair retired tramway cars it has since developed into a fully fledged attraction with working tram routes indoor exhibition spaces nature walks and more as well as facilities for visitors to eat drink and explore the site. Their existing Guidebook had served them well for 5 years but sales were declining and the content was getting dated especially as the recent years had brought a number of rapid changes and improvements. The refreshed Guidebook was to be packed with new content images and information. I worked alongside the team at Crich to design the Guidebook alongside their brand guidelines. The Crich team were keen to provide a clean clear look to the Guidebook this involved stripping back some of the more over-decorative elements of the brand and streamline fonts and photography frames some of which had given other marketing materials a seaside tram feel but didnt encompass the wider tram history the museum explored. The book is compact easy to handle whilst visiting and utilises well-sized text carefully set with a selection of great images of the Tramway Village in action as well as historical images of the site as it developed. An especially interesting spread includes a timeline of the sites history the arrivals of each tramcar and the progress of the site from hobby enthusiasts storage to a popular local day out. The final printed piece a 52-page perfect bound book feels excellent to hold the print provided made a great job of the production. You can buy the Guidebook from the Tramway Village when you visit or if its perhaps a little too far purchase it online from the Crich Tramway website. The project was great to work on the folks at the Tramway Village a pleasure to collaborate with and Im delighted with the result of the hard work of everyone involved. It was refreshing to work with an experienced, professional graphic designer who quickly understood what we wanted to achieve at Scoops Diner. We provided the bare bones and Kieran fleshed it out to create a spectacular end product design. Aside from the graphic design, I found Kieran to be a warm, genuine, humorous and down to earth chap who pro-actively gave positive and constructive advice on other aspects of our business. I have already and will continue to recommend Kieran to other businesses for his design services work.
