At some point in the discussion of a new branding project, the client will almost always ask what files they expect to receive. At first, I found this an odd query, although perfectly valid, my assumption was alway that I’d supply every file they’d need, why would I design a logo and do anything less?

Lets cut to the chase, I’ll assume you’re reading this because are looking for a logo?
Good, because designing logos is what I do.

Like a real iceberg, 90% of the project mass is unseen. It happens behind closed doors and in designers heads. Things like the designer and client defining the brief, brainstorming, drafting, regular client feedback and refinement.

So a little while back I was invited by the excellent people of free invoicing and accounting software, Debitoor to have a chat with them about design and branding.

I spotted this rather handsome “Derby Parks” logo on a sign, but I can’t find any more info about it…

I was contacted by a new client to create a logo for a compensation advice website, Compensation Made Easy. The business was a new venture and they had almost everything in place including a web site but they’d not sorted out their logo.
The site was due for launch in a week so the logo was needed FAST! This made encouraged me to create a small video that I’d been thinking about for a while, a condensed sped up version of the design process I go through for such projects.

I found myself browsing the StartUp Britain web site the other day. It’s backed by a number of big companies like Dell, Paypal and O2 as well as David Cameron, and founded by a group of well known entrepreneurs.
Set up to encourage enterprise in the UK, to give guidance, provide tips and special offers to start-ups. There’s plenty on there but often you just get a ink to another web site to follow up on.

There is plenty wrong with it but I wouldn’t say it’s hateful to look at and it will look nice on customers bills and in their promotional materials. But I do have issues with it.
Firstly the ‘British Gas’ looks really ungainly. The Gas in particular look wobbly, the tapering in of the G makes the a and s look wonky, the whole think looks like one of those optical illusions where the picture seems to be moving. The dots on the i’s are pretty much awful as well, designed to match the tips of t and h, but ending up looking like either fingernails or one of those mini cans of deodorant.

We took a trip to the Wirksworth Festival on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway (EVR) at the weekend. It was our first trip both to the festival and on the train, with a bit of help from the weather it turn out to be quite successful.
The EVR is a great little project, community owned and run by volunteers. This means that pretty much all the staff are pleasant to speak to, quite the opposite of a regular train experience.

I’ll let go of this bone soon, but while I’m on council logo’s, here’s a few I like, just to pick up the mood.
All of this does lead us to the question of does it matter if your council’s got a good logo or not? I’d rather they spend the money on something else, like emptying my bin or paying staff a bit better.
Kieran has supported Yellow for some years now and during this time he has provided us with all aspects of design support, including design consultancy, branding, website creation, marketing communications material and general design support. On a 600gsm stock my business cards are fabulous, really sturdy and thick, they also have a great feel to the finish. They also feature some of my fave projects to make a pocket portfolio!
When the ReST vulnerability hit the news, I was happy that my hosted websites were already safe.
